Cem-Anahuac, Aztecs

______

Before the Spanish Conquest, the Mexica Indians maintained a vast and war torn empire in central Mexico. The city of Tenochtitlan, known as the Heart of the One World, is located on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco, a flooded volcanic crater. Surrounding the lake are the many cities of the Mexica. Alien and disturbing, the Mexica ritual human sacrifices dismayed and sickened the Spanish conquerors in the 1500's, but didn't keep them from overlaying the similar iconic images with their own religion of Roman Catholicism. The Mexicas were traders and professional warriors. Often to provide the necessary xochimique, or sacrificial victims, they would contract wars with neighboring cities to appease their gods. The Aztec Indians were actually a small agricultural tribe near the coast, and though the Mexica are descendants of this tribe, they would be very disgruntled as warriors to know that they should have been called the Weed People.
