This may be a nitpicky point, but I would like to observe how
annoying and frustrating it is to have the gate out of a hometown
locked at night.

Well, it WAS a walled city.
I think you can make the teensy concession to reality and wait a couple
ticks. It's not like newbies have anywhere they HAVE to be.
Besides, the guards always open the doors for me :b
