Wow.. this board has been so quiet and all of a sudden there's
lots of things to read. Just a quick note on my feelings.
Aegir raises some nice points in his 8 posts, esp on strings, but
on most of the pkill stuff I'll have to disagree. I don't know him,
but from his posts I will hazard a guess that he is a str fighter,
with either a hook, greaves or both, has decent damroll/hitroll,
uses bash/rage a lot, and is close to maxed out on rent. He's what I
would call a monster hitter, and one of the more fun character-combos
to play. However, good as the character is, he has trouble fighting
against characters who have the defenses and tactics almost specifically
designed to combat this combo (although I do agree that a 60 spi augment
is a really really nifty and nice thing to have). It's like Mike Tyson
fighting Bruce Lee, and insisting that all fighters wear gloves, can't
hit below the belt, and can't kick.
I think the fact that Aegir seems to be as good as a str hitter can be,
and still find difficulty against certain character types, highlights
the diversity that this mud has. I watched a few pkill tourneys before
and was really impressed how certain characters seemed to win so easily
against one type, and get thrashed so easily by another, and occasionally
with a bit of luck the tide turns so fast. (Str/dex killed con mage, who
was then killed by dex/augmentor, who was then kill by a str/dex who just
happened to land a couple bashes in a row). That pkillers actually play
various classes and not just all follow the same formula seems to indicate
that all classes have strengths and weaknesses, esp with a bit of tactics,
planning and experience. Aegir raises some good ideas from a monster hitter
point of view, but perhaps they would swing the balance of the MUD to
another extreme. I do agree augment is a bit easy to attain, especially
when augment stats + fighting stats also grant you lots of spells and druid
abilities such as brew etc. Add to that a dipped quiver (not sure if those
still work, 25 arrows dipped in a small glass vial to fire of 25 blindies)
and the battle-mage seems extremely viable, unless of course inspired
against a monster hitter. Working around opponents' weaknesses is pretty
much the basic tactic in any battle, and judging from what I read I would
say that I am really impressed with the depth of thought and planning that
goes into character design, and the various tactics and options available
to all characters. That can't be a bad thing.
Just my ignorant, never-pkilled-before 2 cents.
