A few assumptions first.
You've created plenty of chars, have pk'd with plenty of them, and
the chars you have are competent but not QUITE the char you want.
So you need to create a new char, something you've done gazillion times
before, and something which provides you no challenge but tediousness.
Worse, the char you want requires somewhat specific stats thanks to eq
that is almost a must -- the cheap hp eq, for example. To see if your rol
can accomodate your intended setup, you need to lvl to 10, mostly because
one point diff could be crucial...
Unfazed, you create a new char, lvl it to 10... then find out you can't
get what you want with this char. Oh well, make another, lvl it to 10,
and it turns out this one isn't quite the one either...
At this point, I personally get fairly frustrated. I don't quite see
the point of 'random stats' when they aren't random enough. 16-50 isn't
much a leeway for stats to vary, esp if they are paired. Means that
all stat rolls are highly similar but never exactly the way you want them
to be.
I don't think there's anything achieved in having stat rolls that one cann
decide, or cannot reroll. It gives a good excuse to make ppl use obscure
items, i guess, but not much more than that. Even if ppl got to pick and
choose the exact stats they wanted -- the 50-16 range is fine, but it
would be better to be able to have 49 49 49 19 16 16 instead of 49 49 49
17 17 17.
If anything, i'd much rather have a dice roll system where the 198 pts
get rolled like this:
You simply roll the a 1d50 6 times, and start adding the remainder
or subtract the amount overboard from the end. So if you rolled a
50 46 43 34 22 16, which is 13 pts over 198, you start subtracting
that from the end. Leaving 16 alone since it's the min, you can
subtract 6 from 22, then 7 from 34, getting 50 46 43 27 16 16,
a combination impossible under the current roll.
(current system would make it 50 46 43 23 20 16)
Or you could get a 33 33 33 33 30 30, which would then become
39 33 33 33 30 30, something again not possible under the
current system. Granted this significantly increases the chances
of getting a 50 or a 16, there could be an option to let the
player distribute them as evenly as they can.
Or we could just give all players 16 all stats and let them
spray the remainder whereever they want it, abiding by the 50 max
restriction.
At least let's try to get rid of the pairing system, it's an
artificial way... too much so.

Maybe that's how other ppl play, level to 10, remake, blah blah...
and maybe that's why i always get kicked around at PK is cause I don't
but I think it's kind of defeating the purpose of the game to play that
way. While I think your suggestion for a rolling system (the add/subtract
one, that is) is good, I think that if you get a char that's "not quite"
what you want, so what? just keep it going and work it to be what you do
want or, maybe, and this is a novel idea, have a char that's different
than every other char out there. People think there's something wrong
with me because my chars have a heavy leaning toward con as their fight
stat even if they're mages or snipers, but to my knowledge, mine is the
only 800-hp sniper out there, and I like it that way.
As far as the ideas you put forth- I like the suggestion of more random
stats because I will admit, especially on mages, I spend a bit of time at
level 2 figuring out what my stats are and what I need for certain spells.
Plus, having more random stats would, I think, create more diversity among
characters. I don't like the base 16s and re-distribute as we like with a
50 max, otherwise everyone will have a stat that's a natural 50 and can be
a naked 63 after certain things are done. Leave it blind and increase the
randomness as Lagmonster suggests, I think.
