Old hit/dam eq presents a definite problem. Either wipe the hit/dam
from all old items or change the current hit/dam items back to what
they were.
Don't get me wrong. I am -not- someone who screamed bloody murder at the
hit/dam changes without testing them. I do not spam auction with "wtb
old SSS, herne's, cyclope's eye, etc". Neither am I someone who never used
hit/dam eq enough to be affected by the change. I have quite a few
characters who are 35+/45+ (hit/dam), unagg, plus the odd 40dex con/minder
with 23/30, also unagg.
When the new hit/dam eq went in, I was one of the first of those to say,
well, this should be interesting, and it could be a nice solution to
being bashed 4 times by a player then dying without doing much damage.
(Most pkillers have had those days, I think.)
I retired my pkiller when the new hit/dam stuff went in (the aforementione
con mage), partly because a) I didn't want stuff looted (I'm not totally
selfless), b) I didn't think it would be fair fighting people with
totally new eq, and c) I wanted to see what fighting with totally new eq
would be like, both in mobkill and in pkill.
Since the introduction of the new hit/dam eq I have made 2 characters
(both level 50 now) to test it. Strictly no old stuff, even though I was
offered quite a bit of it. One was a con/mind/dex c3 create but I switched
to str/con because con/dex personally bores me. I don't really play even
the old con/dexers I have. THe other is dex/str. Both are pkokall.
Before the new hit/dam eq, I enjoyed mobkill for its own sake. I actually
found it -gasp- fun! But only with these two new characters did I really
see -why- I found it fun. For me, no spel can beat the nice cheap thrill
of capping/ripping repeatedly on the same poor mobbie in one fight.
Immolate is nice, sets things on fire, and just doesn't do it for me.
I no longer find mobkill enjoyable with my two new characters. For me it's
now blah, blah and more blah. I don't kill for the sheer joy of it anymore
except with my old characters. And I'm not demanding that I cap/rip every
round, especially not on a dex/str. Just decimating mostly 7/10 rounds in
a fight, on a dex/str with a heavy weapon would make me happy. I don't do
that even when I weaken armor.
This new hit/dam stuff would have rocked if people all went out and
started making nice new characters -or- threw away all of their old stuff
just to see what the new stuff is like to use. It's given me options,
sure, I can actually hold something other than a Herne's now! I have rent!
All this is rather hard to bear in mind when you want to go on a big run
or you want to help kill a big mob, and -everyone- else there is 30+/40+
hit/dam, barring the healers (who may be that too).
I don't like leeching, in a group like that I just feel useless. So I tend
to leave these groups. What do they need with the puny 27/17 that was the
best I could come up with on a dex/str for anyway? Or the 6/32 on a str/co
-WHIFF- Missed again!
I'm not sure if this is the actual reason, but it seems to me that one of
the main reasons why eq swapping is illegal is that it puts old players on
a much more advantageous footing than new ones. If it were legal, old
players would be really huge compared to new ones. Many new players,
seeing this, would probably get quite frustrated, ask themselves why
they should bother, and leave.
Old hit/dam eq is creating a rift like that.
The old eq issue isn't just about one or even 30 blinding wormies or
lavaflow Nuada's bouncing through the mud crashing and burning things. The
old eq is entire eq sets. It's about a huge number of old character
-types- running around the mud that are far more powerful than anything
that can be built with all new eq. And because of the old character types,
changing the mobs so that they have less ac, hp, whatever and are again
fun for new people, who like me, would settle for just decimating nice
and regular with a dex/str at 50, fighting level 50 mobs, just isn't
possible. It would make old character types even more powerful than they
are now.
I built most of my characters around worn ridings, cyclopes eyes and 2
herne's horns. I would put those in the list before even thinking about
the rest of my stats. And that's not even considering hit/dam weapons or
the other hit/dam eq in the game that I would and did use. People didn't
build their characters about Really_Nice_Parry Gae-Bolgs.
But! At least! All this has helped pk! PK fights are now more enjoyable
because they last longer and are less luck based!
I disagree with that statement. Because of pkok, people can now -choose-
who they wish to fight. People don't have to accept that ridiculously
pumped up hit/dam person with 30dex/str and more hit/dam than 100str/dex
gives by itself. Bluntly put, people don't have to fight anyone who can
beat them anymore, whether through skill ro just a rather silly and
overwhelming set of clothes.
And what about mobkill? I don't really see what was wrong with people
hitting the way they were doing before, with old hit/dam stuff. Players
are -still- using their old characters to do exactly that. There are so
many chats of, "If I DT this character I'll just perma." Usually it's
just melodrama, but where old eq is concerned, I'm not sure it is.
If old hit/dam were restored, mobkill (for me) would be fun again.
If old hit/dam were wiped, then everyone would be on even footing.
Throughout this post I've talked mostly about what -I- find fun, not
because I'm intentionally ignoring anyone's viewpoint, but because
I don't want to presume to speak for any large number of people on what
they find fun. I'm sure there were a lot of people whom the hit/dam change
just didn't affect in any real way. I'm just hoping that other players
who feel the way I do will append their thoughts, critical or otherwise.
Thanks for reading this spammy post.

Whee, a me too post :)
I like to play my 50's with nice hit/dam. Yes, my old 50's. The trouble
is that if I go eq-gathering, and sell on auction, I now insist that
the buyer collect. Even for newbies that don't know the mud. Since
the hit/dam changes, there is no way that I will risk transing over rent.
Before the changes, if I lost my eq setup, I could replace my eq, so was
willing to risk a trans over rent, if someone honestly didn't know how
to get to whichever era I was in, or had some other valid reason for
requesting delivery.
Which kinda limits my char. Instead of going out ripping on more mobs,
I'm sitting at a banker, describing how to trans from Tara to Industrial
London via tells.
Probably why I have a whole lot of lowbies, and rarely play my old
50's now. I rarely play my new 50's either, cos like Typhoid-Mary said,
they're just not as much fun as the old ones used to be.
